The 3 most important tablet trends

1. Tablets are available in all shapes and sizes

There was a suggestion at last years CES that tablets were all very similar in appearance. That criticism could not be levelled during this year’s exhibition.

As well as the conventional 7-inch and 10-inch tablets, there were an increasing number of slates with dock-able keyboards (led by the impressive Transformer Prime), integrated game controls and tablets which represented some kind of cross-over with Ultrabooks. We also saw a growing number of 8-inch tablets as well as the 5.3-inch Samsung Galaxy Note, which comes with a stylus and blurs the line between smartphone and tablet.

Finally, TabTimes also saw devices with 3D and OLED displays and with water-proof protection.

2. Touch computing

New input methods will be the dominant trend of 2012. Tablet computers such as the iPad might seem like a nice alternative to desktop and laptop computers, but I believe they’re more than that: They’re replacements. Just as the command line (remember that?) gave way to graphical user interfaces, so the mouse will be superseded by touchscreens.

The signs are obvious: Windows 8 and Mac OS X Lion, the latest desktop operating systems, borrow heavy from their mobile counterparts. These new interfaces essentially impose a touchscreen-inspired interface over the traditional desktop environment.

Over time, this half-step will become a whole one, and mobile operating systems will dominate. The transition won’t be complete by the end of 2012, but we’ll be much further down the path, and using computer mice much less often.

3. Social gestures

In the social media realm, social gestures appear to be the leading trend of 2012. Launched by Facebook in September, this so-called “frictionless sharing” functionality removes the need to click a button to share media with your friends. Instead, everything you listen to, read or watch is automatically posted to profile and approve the relevant app.

The trend makes sense for social networks: With 800 million people already on Facebook, its growth is bound to slow. But if sharing becomes automatic, the volume of content on Facebook will grow at an accelerated pace. There’s a big problem, however: Users may be “creeped out” by all this automated sharing of their Web activity and grow suspicious of the apps using it.

More Amazon Kindle Press Releases

New Sony Xperia tablet leaks with thinner look, better innards

The next generation of Sony Tablet S has snuck out in the form of a leaked presentation, touting slim quad-core ways and improved camera action.

The new Xperia-branded tablet, which hasn’t done away with the Tablet S’s funny folded-over looks, is around 42 per cent thinner than its predecessor.

But the body of this new slate is said to be aluminium and splashproof, as well as housing a Tegra 3 quad-core processor and running at least Android 4.0 (Ice Cream Sandwich).

Size matters

It’s retaining the 9.4-inch display with 1280×800 resolution but Sony also seems to be adding a 64GB model to the range, joining the 16GB and 32GB editions.

The cameras are getting a boost as well, from VGA (front) and 5MP (rear) to 1MP (front) and 8MP (rear) on the new model.

Sony has also opted for a 6,000 mAh battery which should up the life from 5 hours of browsing over Wi-Fi on the Tablet S to 10 hours on the new edition.

It looks like the Xperia Tablet will launch alongside a range of accessories, including a cover with built-in keyboard and a stand.

Although the leaked slides don’t suggest any estimated release dates, there are a few prices to mull over: 16GB model for $449.99 (around £300), 32GB for $549.99 (£350) and the 64GB for $649.99 (£420).

Google Nexus 7 review

Undoubtedly tired of watching OEMs make little headway in their uphill struggle against Apple’s ipad, Google executives took the stage at this year’s Google I/O developer conference to announce a branded seven-inch tablet of their own, which the search giant is offering direct through its Play store.

Like other Nexus-branded devices, the Nexus 7 tablet isn’t actually hardware manufactured by Google. As Mountain View has done with Samsung, HTC and Motorola in the past, the company paired with Asus to design and manufacture its slender tablet.

It’s a smart move: Among android tablets, Asus makes some of the best around, but matching the rock-bottom $199 (£130) price of Amazon’s Kindle Fire while exceeding its meager specs would be a challenge for any manufacturer. And make no mistake: The Nexus 7 is more of an effort to stomp out Amazon’s unwelcome (and forked) version of Android more than it’s attempt to dethrone Apple’s reigning champ.

The good news is that very little has been sacrificed along the way, unlike with Amazon’s initial offering. According to Android boss Andy Rubin, Google’s profit margin bears the brunt of any sacrifices made, both from selling hardware at cost but also from tossing in generous perks such as a $25 (or £15) Google Play credit for every Nexus 7 owner.

But enough about why and how Google has released the Nexus 7: Is it worth even $199 / £159 of your hard-earned cash?
