Zerion Software, Inc., the creator of the iFormBuilder mobile platform, participated in the 2013 National CyberWatch Center Mid-Atlantic Regional Collegiate Cyber Defense Competition (CCDC). Held at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory (APL) in Laurel, Maryland on April 10-13, collegiate cyber-defenders worked to protect a mock national democratic election against expert computer hackers.

“The CCDC really shows these students what it’s like to protect a network from a coordinated, malicious cyberattack,” said Casey O’Brien, director of the National CyberWatch Center at Prince George’s Community College (MD). “It’s a phenomenal educational experience that’s also teaching them what it’s like out there in the cybersecurity world.”

Zerion Software provided eight iPads, running iForm Kiosk, allowing participants to vote in the mock election. Using Socket Mobile CHS barcode scanners, participants scanned their Voter ID Card and voted on the factitious country’s president, flag, animal, and local congressional representative. Using the iFormBuilder mobile platform with the iForm Kiosk App, participants scanned their voter card information with the Socket scanner to easily populate voter information and then proceeded to vote. The data was passed securely to the Cloud to allow for real-time results.

The winning team, Millersville University, moved on to the National CCDC in San Antonio.

Walt Otto, an audiologist at Acclaim Hearing Center in Las Vegas, not surprisingly has a customer base that skews to an older population. Early on, it was sometimes comical to hand an iPad to someone who had never touched one before, Dr. Otto says. We had fun teaching them all about it, but it tended to eat up staff time. Now we simply hand them a postcard and a pen and ask them to give us their thoughts. Occasionally, we even take dictation.

In the end, Dr. Otto gets the job done. Customer comments that would never appear online are finding their way onto review sites with a simple piece of paper.
